That acceptance letter is in your hand, you’ve joined the Freshers' Facebook groups, and now the reality is setting in: you actually have to pack. The thought of fitting your entire life into a few boxes can be a mix of exciting and terrifying. What do you really need? What will the university provide?

Don't panic. This is your definitive, no-nonsense guide to packing for university. We’ll cover what to bring, and just as importantly, what to leave at home.

The Golden Rules of University Packing

Before you start, remember these three rules:

Check What’s Already There

Most university halls provide a bed, mattress, desk, chair, and wardrobe. Check your accommodation's website to see a full list of what’s included.

Coordinate with Your Flatmates

You don't need five toasters and five kettles. Jump in your flat's group chat and decide who is bringing what for the kitchen.

You Can Always Buy It Later

You're not moving to a desert island. If you forget something, you can buy it in your new city. Don't stress about packing every single thing you own.

The University Packing Checklist

  • [ ] National Insurance Number (if applicable)

What NOT to Pack for University

  • Candles or incense: Most halls ban them as a fire hazard.
  • Printers: They are bulky, and you can almost always use the university library's printers cheaply.
  • Too many books: You can use the library for most of your reading. Only bring absolute essentials.
  • Appliances: Don't bring things like microwaves or kettles until you've confirmed they aren't already provided.
