The Golden Rules of University Packing

Before you start, remember these three rules:

Check What’s Already There

Most university halls provide a bed, mattress, desk, chair, and wardrobe. Check your accommodation's website to see a full list of what’s included.

Coordinate with Your Flatmates

You don't need five toasters and five kettles. Jump in your flat's group chat and decide who is bringing what for the kitchen.

You Can Always Buy It Later

You're not moving to a desert island. If you forget something, you can buy it in your new city. Don't stress about packing every single thing you own.

The University Packing Checklist

Bedroom & Furnishings

• [ ] Duvet & pillows (check your accommodation for the bed size – it’s often a Single or 3/4 Double)
• [ ] Two sets of bedding
• [ ] Mattress protector (highly recommended!)
• [ ] Clothes for all seasons (but don't pack your entire wardrobe)
• [ ] Coat hangers
• [ ] Small laundry basket or bag
• [ ] Desk lamp
• [ ] Extension lead with surge protection
• [ ] Photos, posters, and decorations to make it feel like home
• [ ] Ear plugs and an eye mask (for noisy halls)
• [ ] Power bank / portable charger
• [ ] Headphones

Kitchen Essentials

• [ ] A small set of pots and pans (one frying pan, one saucepan)
• [ ] One or two baking trays
• [ ] A sharp knife and a chopping board
• [ ] Cutlery, a couple of plates, bowls, and mugs
• [ ] Can opener, bottle opener, and vegetable peeler
• [ ] Tea towels and dishcloths
• [ ] Tupperware for leftovers (essential!)
• [ ] Your favourite snacks and some basic staples (pasta, rice, coffee) to get you through the first few days.

• [ ] Toothbrush, toothpaste, and toiletries
• [ ] Any personal medication
• [ ] A basic first-aid kit (plasters, painkillers, antiseptic wipes)
• [ ] Toilet roll (don't assume there will be one waiting for you!)

Study Supplies

• [ ] Laptop and charger
• [ ] Pens, notepads, and highlighters
• [ ] Folders and binders for your course notes
• [ ] Any required textbooks for your course (check your reading list)

Important Documents & Admin

• [ ] Passport / Driving Licence (ID)
• [ ] University Acceptance Letter

• [ ] National Insurance Number (if applicable)

What NOT to Pack for University

• Candles or incense: Most halls ban them as a fire hazard.
• Printers: They are bulky, and you can almost always use the university library's printers cheaply.
• Too many books: You can use the library for most of your reading. Only bring absolute essentials.
• Appliances: Don't bring things like microwaves or kettles until you've confirmed they aren't already provided.
